Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS)—also called fetal calf serum (FCS)—is the growth supplement of choice when performing routine and technically-demanding cell culture techniques. Most cell types and cell culture systems will benefit from the inclusion of FBS in growth media. Advantages of using fetal bovine serum compared to adult bovine serum include both the lower level of endogenous immunoglobulin present in the serum and increased levels of growth factors. Not only does this result in superior growth profiles for eukaryotic cells, it is an advantage in reducing antibody cross reactivity between the cell culture supplement and the cells growing in culture. The use of FBS is a significant benefit when growing, screening or subcloning hybridoma cells engineered to secrete specific monoclonal antibodies.
