GAPDH (Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase) catalyzes an important energy-yielding step in carbohydrate metabolism, the reversible oxidative phosphorylation of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate in the presence of inorganic phosphate and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD). GAPDH exists as a tetramer of identical 37-kDa subunits, which is reported to be involved in the processes of DNA replication, DNA repair, nuclear RNA export, membrane fusion and microtubule bundling. Since GAPDH is expressed at high levels in most tissues, it is it is widely used as an internal reference indicator.
